Protecting people

You know your projects better than anyone.

Two men seated in front of a wooden building marked “Corps de gardes”; one wears a ranger uniform and yellow rubber boots.
At a guard post of the Itombwe Nature Reserve, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

What you are looking for is to be able to show that they protect the people they affect, with systems your teams actually use. Standards have risen sharply: climate fund environmental and social safeguards, IFC Performance Standards, development bank requirements. That is good news for anyone who knows how to use them. A well-built framework moves a project forward rather than holding it up, and it stands up to an approval committee as well as to a community.

What we do

  • Diagnostics and audits of existing safeguard systems.
  • Social and environmental screening, environmental and social management frameworks, gender action plans.
  • Green Climate Fund accreditation and re-accreditation support: upgrading the environmental and social management system (ESMS) and preparing exchanges with the Fund.
  • Bringing GEF and GCF projects into compliance before approval, and safeguards follow-up through to reporting.
  • Environmental, social and human rights due diligence; partner due diligence.
  • Grievance and remedy mechanisms that affected people actually use.
  • Training for program and compliance teams.

We work with program teams and compliance teams alike. That is often where we add the most: getting two professions with the same objective to speak to each other.

What we bring

At the United Nations Development Programme, Marine Gauthier led a team of four in charge of climate safeguards across a portfolio of more than one hundred and fifty Global Environment Facility and Green Climate Fund projects in more than fifty countries. She was the safeguards focal point for 22 Green Climate Fund projects, from design to reporting: she worked directly with the Fund, integrated its comments and brought the files into line with its requirements. In 2023 and 2024 she supported African development banks through the GCF accreditation of their environmental and social management systems; the banks were accredited. She drafted institutional guidance applied by other teams, and led oversight missions that check, on site, whether the measures announced actually exist.

And years spent on the other side, with Congolese organizations subject to those same requirements. We know what they cost, and we know how to make them workable.
